The Salon

The salon portion of the Disneyland Walkthrough had to be most awe inspiring, given that it is the most richly dressed, lit and photographed room in the movie.  I image that, when passing through this section, one felt for the first time like they were truly aboard the Nautilus submarine.

Visitors passed through the forward door in a fashion similar to the film, but minus the steps, and headed aft toward the pipe organ.  Along the way were most of the props and set pieces used in the film but not all.  The most notable change was at the entrance to the salon.  The Roman Sofa, which in the film had been on the right side of the salon entrance facing forward, had now been moved to the left side to replace the void filled by the lack of a large desk (most notable for its role in the 1946 film "It's a Wonderful Life).  The desk was most likely rented from another facility and had to be returned at the end of filming.  Perhaps some day, someone will have the time to go to through RKO's books to find out who that desk was rented from.  I sure hope so, I want it in my house!

All the sofas used in 20k, I should mention, still exist and are, for the moment, safe and sound...

Guests walked along a predetermined path (set by chain link) looking at the decor in the salon.  About halfway along, they would come to the starboard viewport were the giant squid could be seen writhing in a dry-for-wet environment.  The squid was actually located in a tin shack on the exterior of the building!
